Make a difference

On World Ukulele Day, let’s get our strum on and enjoy the wonderful world of ukes!

If we all make a small difference by playing our ukuleles, who knows, it may make a big difference to someone out there.

Try playing along to your favourite song, link up with a friend or learn something new.

You could even make this the year you join a group, learn three new chords or play live in front of other people.

What to play on World Ukulele Day?

‘It’s A Ukulele Day’ says it all! This popular song is easy to learn and was especially written for uke players by Norine Mungo. Watch Norine and the ‘Tampa Bay Ukelele Society’ playing it below. I guarantee you will be tapping your toes, clicking your fingers and singing along in no time!

Happy Strumming 🙂

The story behind the song

This is what my good friend Norine said about how the song came about:

‘I was challenged by a friend who loved my song writing to write something for World Ukulele Day. I came up with a first draft, then later on in the year, I rewrote the song a bit because my thought was, sheesh, every day should be a ukulele day! I also rewrote the second verse. Since doing this song for the last ten years, I’ve been sent videos from all around the world, folks everywhere are playing this song.

When I wrote the song I was trying to incorporate a movement in the Far East, called Ukuleles for Peace. This organization brings students together including Palestinian , Israeli, and Muslim, teaching them to play music on the uke. The hope being that if the children play together and learn music together, then later they may not want to point guns at each other when they grow up.

So, with that in mind, the newer version really reflects the thought of playing a ukulele over holding a gun or embracing hate.

I always invite folks to record themselves playing the song and to send it to me. I keep those in a playlist on my YouTube so that everyone can see it!’ Norine Mungo
