The Story Behind the Song

“Winter Wonderland” was written in 1934 by Richard B. Smith, with music by Felix Bernard. Smith, who had tuberculosis and was being treated in a sanitarium in Pennsylvania, was inspired by the sight of fresh snow and children playing outside. Looking out his window, he imagined a cheerful winter scene and wrote lyrics celebrating the beauty and fun of the season.

Although many people think of it as a Christmas song, “Winter Wonderland” was not written specifically for Christmas. Its lyrics make no mention of Christmas, Santa Claus, or religious themes. Instead, the song paints a picture of snowy landscapes, sleigh bells, building a snowman, and enjoying winter with a loved one.
