The Story Behind the Song
White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin and first performed by Bing Crosby on Christmas Day 1941, just weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbour.
Berlin wrote the song as a nostalgic reflection on the warmth and simplicity of traditional Christmases. It was featured in the 1942 film Holiday Inn, where Crosby’s gentle performance struck a chord with audiences during World War II.
The lyrics express longing for home and happier times, which resonated deeply with American troops stationed overseas and families separated by the war. Crosby often sang the song for servicemen, and many listeners found it deeply moving because it reminded them of loved ones and the life they hoped to return to.
