How to Sing the Blues - A Guide for Ukulele Players
Lesson 4 - Singing the Blues
Hi there Blues Buddies, gather round!
It’s great to be able to play the blues, but we couldn’t write a ukulele blues course without mentioning how to sing the blues.
And here’s the good news:
You already can.
Today we’ll be covering:
1. It’s All in the Story
2. Call and Response
3. Let’s Try One Together
4. Feeling the Groove
5. The Secret Ingredient
The blues is not about being sad. It’s about being honest.
1. It’s All in the Story
The blues is a way for people to tell their stories - about trouble, love, work, hope, and everything in between!
It’s storytelling with rhythm. It’s emotion with a backbeat. And the voice? That’s the star.
Blues Lyrics
Blues lyrics often follow an AAB pattern:
Line 1: Say something
Line 2: Say it again (or almost the same)
Line 3: Respond to it
Example
Line 1: I woke up this morning, my uke was in tune,
Line 2: I woke up this morning, the sound filled my room,Line 3: I sang like a wolf, well it was a full moon, oh yeah!
See? Honest. Simple. Personal. A little dramatic never hurts.
When you sing:
Don’t rush.
Let your voice bend.
Slide between notes if it feels good.
Tell the story like you mean it!
You don’t need tragedy. You need personality.
2. Call and Response
The blues loves conversation.
Try this:
👉 Play a short riff or chord sequence - C, F G7 and C for example
👉 Answer it with your voice.
👉 Or sing a line and respond with your uke.
It’s like you’re talking to yourself - but musically.
Here’s the golden rule:
Don’t ‘perform’ the blues.
Talk the blues.TOP TIP: Listen to Etta James - that delicious stretch and bend. Or the storytelling ease of B.B. King (yes, he sang too!).
It’s not tidy. It’s true.
3. Let’s Try One Together
Start with C and F. Nice and easy.
Verse 1
[C]I practiced all week, but my fingers feel slow
[C]I practiced all week, just can’t get the flow
[F]When the blues start calling
[F]My uke says, ‘Let’s [C]go!’
Feeling confident? Make up the next verse yourself - if we can do it, so can you! 😊🎶
🎤 Play-Along: ‘Down at the Uke Shack’
Ready to put it all together? Grab your ukulele (and a kazoo, if you dare) for another Ukuleles Unanimous original blues jam.
Key of C Major – Chords You’ll Need:
• C / F / G and an optional E7
Sing along and play ‘Down at the Uke Shack’ specially designed with us blues beginners in mind!
🎵 Play-Along Tips:
✅ Use the shuffle strum throughout
✅ Feeling bold? Add a kazoo solo in the G7 bar at the end. We won’t stop you!
Imagine you’re telling a friend what happened. Let your voice:
Relax.
Lean into certain words.
Stretch a syllable if it feels right.
Slide between notes like you’re sighing.
4. Feeling the Groove
The blues usually swings.
1. Instead of singing in strict, marching beats, think:
DAH-da, DAH-da, DAH-da
Like a train rolling steadily along the track.
Let your phrasing ride that groove. Don’t rush. The blues hates being hurried.
2. Leave Space
This one surprises people.
You don’t have to fill every moment.
Sing a line…
Then let it breathe.
That space lets the story land. It lets the audience lean in. It gives your ukulele (or band) a chance to answer you.
Remember, the blues is always a conversation - not a performance.
5. The Secret Ingredient
Confidence? Helpful.
Technique? Lovely.
But the true secret?
Permission💫
Permission to:
Sound rough around the edges
Be dramatic
Be playful
Be heartfelt
Be you
The blues made room for voices like Robert Johnson and countless others who simply told their truth.
And there’s room for yours too.
Take a breath.
Loosen your shoulders.
Sing one honest line about your day.
Stretch it. Bend it. Feel it.
Your Practice Mission:
This week:
Make up your own call & response blues verse
Get warmed up, ready to sing and play
Practice singing along to ‘Down at the Blues Shack’ a few times
Perform your own creation in front of a mirror, or record yourself singing.
Remember: In the blues, there are no mistakes, just new ideas waiting to happen.
Keep strumming and let those blue notes sing! 🎶
✨Before We Go…
Remember, the blues is all about - three chords, one heart and endless stories!
Now take a deep breath and strum that C.
Congratulations! Today you sang the blues 😊🎶
