The Story Behind the Song

The song was originally written in 1961 by Phil Medley and Bert Berns. It was first recorded by The Top Notes, but that version didn’t gain much traction.

The Beatles’ famous version

The Beatles recorded “Twist and Shout” in 1963 for their debut album Please Please Me. Here’s the legendary part:

  • It was recorded last in a long session at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios).

  • John Lennon had a cold and his voice was already strained.

  • Knowing he could probably only deliver one or two takes, Lennon went all out.

They nailed it in the first take, and that’s the version you hear on the album. His raw, almost shredded vocal became one of the most electrifying performances in rock history!
