The Story Behind the Song
“Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” was written in 1934 by song writing partners John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie during the depths of the Great Depression.
The song was created as a cheerful reminder of the magic of Christmas. Its famous lyrics describe Santa watching children throughout the year: “He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake” and encourage them to behave well because Santa is preparing his list of who has been naughty or nice.
The song first gained national attention when entertainer Eddie Cantor performed it on his popular radio show in November 1934. The response was enormous: sheet music and recordings sold in huge numbers, and the song quickly became a Christmas classic.
Over the decades, the song has been recorded by countless artists, including Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, and The Jackson 5, becoming one of the most enduring Christmas songs ever written.
