The Story Behind the Song
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree was written in 1958 by Johnny Marks, who also penned several other holiday classics. The song was recorded by Brenda Lee when she was just 13 years old. Despite her age, Lee’s powerful voice sounded much older.
When the single was released in late 1958, it performed only modestly. As Lee’s career took off in the early 1960s, the song gradually gained popularity and became a seasonal favourite through annual radio play. Its popularity grew again after it appeared in Home Alone, introducing it to a new generation.
Decades later, streaming and renewed interest kept the song returning to the charts each Christmas. In 2023, 65 years after its release, it finally reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a record for the longest wait between a song’s release and its first time topping the chart.
What began as a recording by a teenage singer eventually became one of the world’s most enduring Christmas classics, celebrated for its upbeat energy and nostalgic holiday spirit.
