The Story Behind the Song
“Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley & His Comets is one of the most important songs in the history of popular music, not because it was the first rock and roll song, but because it was the one that made the genre explode worldwide.
It was first recorded in 1954, but at first it wasn’t a major hit. The band was already experimenting with blending country, rhythm and blues, and early rock-style rhythms, and this song fit perfectly into that developing sound.
Its success is often seen as the moment rock and roll became mainstream. While earlier artists like Chuck Berry and Little Richard were shaping the sound, “Rock Around the Clock” was the song that brought it into mass culture and global popularity.
