The Story Behind the Song
Nine Million Bicycles is a gentle, reflective pop song performed by Katie Melua and written and produced by Mike Batt. It appears on her 2005 album Piece by Piece.
The song’s origin is surprisingly simple: Mike Batt was inspired by a visit to Beijing and a striking fact about the city, that it had an enormous number of bicycles in daily use. He used this image as the opening line, “There are nine million bicycles in Beijing,” to create a sense of scale and quiet wonder about the world and human life within it.
