The Story Behind the Song
“Fly Me to the Moon” is one of the most famous songs associated with Frank Sinatra, but he was not the original artist to perform it. The song was written in 1954 by American songwriter and pianist Bart Howard. Howard originally titled the song “In Other Words,” and it was first recorded by singer Kaye Ballard. Although the song gained some attention, it did not become a major hit at first.
Over the years, many artists recorded their own versions, but the song's popularity soared when Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1964. His version appeared on the album It Might as Well Be Swing and featured the orchestra of Count Basie. The arrangement was created by Quincy Jones, who transformed the song from a slow waltz into a lively swing number. This energetic arrangement, combined with Sinatra’s smooth vocals, turned the song into a timeless classic.
