The Story Behind the Song

“Feliz Navidad” was written in 1970 by José Feliciano. Growing up in Puerto Rico, Feliciano was surrounded by traditional Christmas music and wanted to create a song that reflected his heritage while bringing people together through a simple, universal message.

At the time, Feliciano was living in the United States and felt homesick during the holidays. He wrote the song using both Spanish and English so that people from different backgrounds could sing it together. The lyrics are remarkably simple, repeating “Feliz Navidad” (“Merry Christmas”) and “I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.”
