The Story Behind the Song

In the story, Captain Georg von Trapp sings “Edelweiss” as a farewell to his homeland, Austria, which is being absorbed into Nazi Germany. The song expresses love for the country’s mountains, traditions, and identity through the symbol of the edelweiss flower, a small alpine flower associated with the Austrian Alps. Rather than being a patriotic anthem, it is a gentle, nostalgic tribute to home.

The song holds special significance in musical-theatre history because it was the last song Hammerstein ever wrote. He was seriously ill while working on the musical and died shortly after it opened. As a result, “Edelweiss” is often viewed as a personal farewell from one of Broadway’s greatest lyricists.

In the stage show and the later 1965 film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, the song appears at emotional moments when the von Trapp family faces political upheaval and the prospect of leaving Austria. Its simple melody and heartfelt lyrics create a sense of warmth and longing that contrasts with the tension surrounding the characters.

Because the song sounds authentic and traditional, many listeners have assumed it is a genuine Austrian folk tune. In reality, it is an American theatrical composition that successfully captures the feeling of folk music. Its enduring popularity comes from that blend of simplicity, nostalgia, and emotional sincerity, making “Edelweiss” one of the most memorable songs in musical theatre.
