The Story Behind the Song
“Dream a Little Dream of Me” (often associated with Doris Day) has a much longer history than her recording alone, and its story begins decades earlier.
The song was originally written in 1931 by Fabian Andre, Wilbur Schwandt, and lyricist Gus Kahn. It became a popular standard, recorded by several artists over the years, but it wasn’t until much later that it reached a new wave of mainstream popularity through different interpretations.
Doris Day recorded her version in 1957, during the height of her success as both a singer and Hollywood film star.
The song itself is about longing and tender escapism, someone asking their loved one to “dream a little dream” of them as they fall asleep. It blends romantic desire with a soft, dreamy sense of distance, which is why it became such a durable standard across generations.
While Doris Day was not the first to record it, her version helped cement the song’s place in the Great American Songbook tradition. Later, even more famous renditions (such as by The Mamas & the Papas) brought it renewed popularity, but Day’s recording remains one of the classic mid-century interpretations that defined its enduring, soothing character.
