The Story Behind the Song
Blue Christmas was written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson and was first recorded by country singer Doye O'Dell in 1948. The song tells the story of someone feeling lonely and heartbroken during the festive season because they are separated from a loved one. Its title refers to feeling “blue,” meaning sad or depressed.
Several artists recorded the song in the 1950s, but it became famous when Elvis Presley recorded it for his 1957 Christmas album, Elvis' Christmas Album. Elvis’s version combined country, blues, and rock-and-roll influences, featuring his distinctive vocals and backing harmonies by the Jordanaires. His playful vocal style and the song’s gentle rhythm gave it a unique sound that set it apart from more traditional Christmas songs.
