The Story Behind the Song
Before it ever crackled through radios, “Bad Moon Rising” began as a quiet unease hanging in the California air. John had been watching an old black-and-white film late one night—storms tearing through fields, skies turning against the earth—when something stuck. Not fear exactly, but a sense that trouble doesn’t always arrive loudly.
The next morning, with sunlight doing its best to pretend everything was fine, he picked up a cheap acoustic guitar. Not the kind you’d expect to summon thunder - more the kind you’d strum on a porch with bare feet and a chipped mug of coffee. And that’s where the strange magic happened. Instead of writing something dark and heavy, the melody came out bright. Bouncy. Almost cheerful. Like a group of ukuleles!
In the studio, the band leaned into that paradox. Tight rhythm, clean strums, no overcomplication.
By the time it was finished, “Bad Moon Rising” wasn’t just a warning. It was a grin in the face of it. A song that says: storms are coming, sure - but listen closely, and you might still hear a chorus of small, bright strings carrying you through.
