The Story Behind the Song
Away in a Manger is one of the most beloved Christmas carols, but its origins are surprisingly uncertain. The song first appeared in print in the late 1880s in the United States. For many years, it was mistakenly attributed to Martin Luther and was even known as “Luther’s Cradle Hymn,” though historians have found no evidence that he wrote it.
Despite its uncertain authorship, “Away in a Manger” spread rapidly through churches and Sunday schools and became a staple of Christmas services around the world. Its lullaby-like quality and message of simplicity and devotion have made it especially popular with children and families.
Today, the carol is considered a traditional Christmas classic, cherished for its peaceful depiction of the Nativity and its enduring message of hope and comfort.
